Jetties Universal Terminal, Singapore

Project type:
Jetties for 1,000 to 320,000 dwt
Services:
Detailed design as part of a design-construct project
Country:
Singapore / Jurong Island
Completion:
September 2007
Client:
Penta Ocean - McConnell Dowell JV

The Universal Terminal Project consisted of the development of a major storage and trading hub on Jurong Island in Singapore with marine facilities catering for the full range of tankers from bunker barges to VLCC’s.

Having previously been involved with the client at the feasibility stage DMC bv (Singapore Branch), as a nominated sub-contractor, was employed by the contractor, a joint-venture between Penta Ocean and McConnell Dowell, to prepare the detailed design of the jetties for the project.

The jetty structures comprise nine berths in total. Six berths lie along the Sinki fairway including two VLCC berths and a 50,000 dwt berth along the fairway together with three back-berths for bunker vessels up-to 15,000 dwt. Three more berths are located inside the Banyan basin and are designed to accommodate one large vessel of up to 160,000 dwt at the central berth or two vessels of up to 46,000 dwt simultaneously on the outer berths. The works further incorporated two access trestles including pipe-racks and a firewater pump platform as well as a crash barrier.

The structures are built in water depths ranging from 15 to 33 meters and consist of steel tubular piles with concrete top structures. Extensive use was made of pre-fabricated elements to increase quality and decrease the amount of work over water. Anchors and sockets were required for some of the heavier loaded piles in shallow rock of the Jurong formation.

The bulk of the design work was performed to a very tight schedule over a 9 month period and concurrently with construction activities in progress. This work was followed with design support during further construction.
