Aqueduct Abcoude, the Netherlands
Together with the decision to enlarge the rail capacity between Utrecht and Amsterdam from 2 to 4 tracks, it was decided by Prorail to construct an aqueduct at Abcoude. As a result level crossings can be deleted which increases overall safety.
With the arrival of the aqueduct the former railroad tracks, crossings and lifting bridge are gone. The security has improved considerably. The total length of the structure is 840 meter. At the location of the river “het Gein” the closed section of the aqueduct is 60 m, comprising also the road crossing.
The lowered position of the 4 railway tracks not only diminishes the obstruction caused by the existing railway tracks at grade but also diminishes the noise impact on the environment.
The structure has been built in two stages, as the flow of the Gein river had to be maintained. At the same time also the station Abcoude is moved.
